Language and Culture

‘Language and Culture’ is mainly concerned with a complex topic, which is the interrelationship between language and culture. While the main aim of the present course is to discuss some pertinent issues relating to the way culture has an impact on the way communication takes place, it also examines the way language constitutes and shapes culture. In order for the course to achieve its purpose, students will be introduced to some of the most influential theories and hypotheses in the field whose main aim is to reach a better understanding as to how language and culture relate. The course is, therefore, made up of the following components:

     • General Introduction : A definition of culture.  The relationship between language and culture.

     • Ethnography of communication

     • The communicative functions of language

     • Units of interaction: Speech situation, speech event, speech act, SPEAKING mnemonic

     • Speech norms: communicative competence, norms governing speech

     • Language culture and thought: Sapir Whorf Hypothesis

     • Colour terms

    • Code switching
